Your Unborn Baby Will Suffer From The Effects Of Smoking During Pregnancy

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

With all the scientific knowledge now available on the effects of smoking on your health, you would think the message would be getting through. This does not excuse the multi-national tobacco companies whose practices border on the criminal. Take a look at what happens from the production of cigarettes through to the toxic chemical created and released by the burning process and you will begin to understand what the act of smoking is doing to your health.

Now lets take a look at what the effects of smoking during pregnancy has on your unborn baby..  The effects range from mild to very extreme.  These effects of smoking during pregnancy, can have negative repercussions not only on the development of the baby but will have ongoing implications through childhood and possibly into adulthood.

What Are The Probable Complications in the Mother?

The effects of smoking during pregnancy on the expectant mother are as follows:
1. Possible hospitalization due to excessive vomiting.
2. Urinary tract infections,
3. An ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg grows in the wrong place.
4. The placenta separating from the uterine wall before delivery or an excess of amniotic fluid.

These complications are known to occur both during pregnancy and delivery.

As the effects of smoking during pregnancy can cause a miscarriage or a stillbirth, there is a probability that psychological problems, such as depression, can arise.  Lastly, if hemorrhaging occurs during birth, this can cause the mother to die.

Now Lets Consider The Possible Complications in the Child

The effects of smoking during pregnancy on an unborn child can be divided into four categories.  The four categories are:
1. Retard the size of the baby,
2. Precipitate Genetic abnormalities,
3. Lay the foundation for Illnesses to possibly developed later in childhood,
4. Death.

The birth weight and size of the newborn is greatly altered due to smoking for two reasons.
1. The increased possibility of Preterm delivery.
2. Owing to the impairment of nutrition flowing to the baby, who instead receives chemicals such as nicotine and carbon monoxide instead.  Without the nutrients, the baby is thus often underweight, which increase his or her chances of becoming ill.

More serious effects of smoking during pregnancy can cause genetic abnormalities, such as cleft lip and cleft palate; bowel problems can also be experienced.  Other abnormalities in the sensory systems such as the eyes and ears can be affected.  Finally More severe consequences can be seen.  These include spinal cord problems, cerebral palsy, and mental retardation.

With the forgoing information in mind, you would be wise to consider your actions carefully; do you really want to risk the health of your unborn child?

Unfortunately, the consequences can develop later in childhood.

Quite often in early childhood, respiratory problems, such as asthma, are seen.  Another area of concerns is behavior disorders which often develop in toddlers.  The most shocking consequence of the effects of smoking during pregnancy is sudden infant death syndrome.

The consequences can carry over to adolescents, which includes increased likelihood of smoking themselves.

Responsible parenting should be in the forefront of the minds of the parents, family and friends. The effects of smoking during pregnancy have far reaching repercussions, particularly for the mother, fetus, baby, toddler child and adolescent. It is important that all parents to be, take this information to heart and act accordingly with the wellbeing of their newborn in mind.

The Many Causes of Depression

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

It’s true that physical problems including the way the brain regulates “feel good” chemicals is one of the leading Depression Causes .When your brain is releasing too many or too few chemicals is when you are under clinical depression.  These chemicals are necessary for a happy mood and when the body doesn’t get them, a person will feel sadness no matter what.  However, there are other causes of depression that some people may not understand or expect.  Let’s cover some of them here.

Chemical imbalances are the major causes of depression but depression can be brought on by outside factors as well.  For example, some people suffer from what is called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.  This is when they have depression during the winter months or when there is much less sunlight outside.  Most people prefer a sunny day over a dark and drizzly one, but those with SAD are more sensitive to this situation.Their case is a bit different because its the bad weather and lack of fresh air that causes depression.  Many of these patients are advised to replace their standard light bulbs with those that mimic outside lights and to be outside as much as possible, even if it’s dark and dreary.Sometimes just a quick breath of fresh air and getting outside for a while can really help with depression.

It’s also thought that one can learn Depression and negative thinking which in turn will lead to clinical depression.  It’s as if a person is teaching themselves to be depressed and the body will eventually learn to be that way automatically.  You might compare it to someone that purposely walks with a limp - they will eventually have a real one!  These causes of depression might be pessimistic thinking, a lack of self-esteem, trauma survived such as child abuse, crime, or natural disaster, or severe problems such as job loss, financial setback, poor health, or divorce.  A person thinks about these things in a negative and depressive way and soon those thoughts become automatic.Remember that just having a bad day or having minor fluxuations in your mood does not mean you are depressed.

There are probably numerous other causes of depression.  Scientists and doctors are learning new things about this condition every single day.  As other examples, extreme anxiety can lead a person to depression as the body just shuts down to that heightened state of awareness.  Teenagers who have been victims of bullying are often prone to depression.  Those who have family members with depression have an increased chance of being diagnosed with it themselves.  But with all the causes of depression, doctors are also working hard to find more effective treatment options as well, so don’t hesitate to consult with his or her if you think you have clinical depression.

How Yoga and Meditation Can Improve Your Quality Of Life

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Did you know that yoga and meditation have not only helped stressed out people slow down and relax — but, in some cases, have also cured people of asthma, ADHD, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and cancer? The miraculous nature of yoga and meditation has been witnessed from India to the United States and the science behind the cures indicates that the beta-endorphins released during yoga practice may be the main contributing factor to the physical healing.

One type of meditation yoga is called Sahaja yoga, meaning “spontaneously born within”. This form of yoga and meditation has been in practice in the US since the 1970s but borrows from ancient religion. Spiritual awakening is encouraged mainly through posture and breathing, relaxation techniques and visualizing energy flow. While some forms of fitness yoga stress physical movement, Sahaja emphasizes spirituality and teaching.

Students of this branch will study the three vertical energy channels within the human body: the sun channel (governing our thought processes), the parasympathetic / nervous system channel (governing our body processes) and the moon channel (governing our emotions). In addition to these three channels, millions of chakras (literally translated from Sanskrit to mean “wheels” or energy centers) are swirling around us, keeping the channels in motion. Chakras can vary from religion to religion, but Sahaja Yoga focuses on several in its yoga and meditation: the crown chakra (pituitary gland / consciousness), the third eye chakra (pineal gland / sleep and awakening), the throat chakra (thyroid / growth and maturity), the heart chakra (thymus / stress and wellbeing), the solar plexus chakra (pancreas / digestion and energy), the sacral chakra (groin / sexuality and reproduction) and the root chakra (adrenal gland / basic fight or flight instincts and kundalini awakening).

Another study is the Raja Yoga tradition (the “king” of yoga or “royal path”), which is heavily steeped in spirituality. Practitioners believe in a serious code based upon self-restraint, quietude, concentration, regulation of breathing, uniting body and mind through action, withdrawing from the senses and studying religious texts. Often retreats are offered (by places like the Margaret Austin Retreat Center in Texas or the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California) to help students immerse themselves in a new way of thinking. Students will learn about the Eightfold Path and the seven chakras, in addition to yamas and niyamas (code of conduct and religious observances, respectively).

Curious parties can go to SahajaYoga.org for more information on the teachers, philosophy and practice of yoga and meditation. If you’re in the California region, another highly acclaimed meditation expert and retreat guide is Deepak Chopra, who can be found at Chopra.com. Also, if you go to Yoga.com’s studio search, you can look up Raja Yoga studios near you. IAYT.org has information regarding healing yoga.

There are many different forms of Yoga that people around the world practice. Some use it primarily for its low-impact workout whereas others love the feel of meditation and concentration required in some of the many poses. Yoga is a great way for those suffering from injury or unused to a cardiovascular workout to begin their path to becoming physically and mentally fit. Exercise is an important part of our daily lives and the added benefit of learning relaxation techniques is enough to entice anyone onto a mat. Learning About The Various Types of Yoga

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Celebrities swear by yoga and more specifically, pilates yoga, as the ultimate way of putting the finishing touches on an exercise regimen and toning all those difficult areas. If you’d like to get started, you may not know where to begin. There isn’t just one type of yoga, in fact there are many. This article examines some of the different styles so that you can choose which yoga class would best suit you.

Many beginners like to start with Iyengar yoga, where positions are held longer to provide maximum stretching and minimal injury. Unlike “flow” yoga styles, there are breaks between positions and an emphasis on long, deep stretches for people of all levels. Props like mats, blankets, straps and blocks help take some of the strain off the body.

Fitness yoga aims to increase flexibility, muscle strength and improve energy and cardiovascular systems. This is a more modern approach to the ancient principles and targets certain areas like the gluteus muscle or abdomen to tone and strengthen. Similarly, Pilates yoga is one of the most popular forms, with over 11 million regular practitioners in the US and over 14,000 instructors. The core postural muscles and spinal cord are emphasized, in addition to utilizing flowing movements to strengthen and define.

Ashtanga Vinyasa (also known as “power yoga” or “Raja yoga”) is derived from an ancient Indian manuscript called “the Yoga Kurunta.” The word “ashtanga” literally translates to mean “eight limbs,” which refers to eight positions: yama (moral codes), niyama (self-purification and study), asana (posture), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense control), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (contemplation). Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” After warming up with “Sun Salutations,” the different postures are repeated with smooth flowing movements and specific breathing patterns. This advanced style of yoga attracts people who may typically be the cardio types, participating in kickboxing or step classes, and is intended to help extroverted high-stress personalities find their inner quietude.

A couple of forms of yoga are used for therapeutic purposes. Bikram yoga (also known as “hot yoga”) occurs in a sauna-like room maintained at 95-100 degrees to induce sweating, leading to body cleansing and additional weight loss. These twenty-six positions loosen the muscles in a relaxing way. The Forrest style meditation yoga from Santa Monica California is intended to release inner emotional pain, purify the body of toxins and strengthen the abdomen through deep breathing and stretches.

Some styles focus on the spiritual side, with chanting, meditating and contemplating, borrowing inspiration from the eight principles of ashtanga. Jivamukti and Kundalini use chanting and rapid repetitive movements to free trapped energy. Karma yoga is derived from the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient sandskrit Hindu scripture and is based around the idea of “union through action.” It is believed that one can express love for God by giving up selfish desires and participating in “detached, selfless action,” which will eventually result in liberation. The Anusara style is a form of meditation yoga for beginners because teachers believe in positive communication to open the heart and mind. All levels are welcomed and there is a philosophical belief in the intrinsic goodness of humankind. This light-hearted approach to alignment is a good springboard to more intense forms.

Many participants report increased happiness and energy after a yoga class. While you won’t get any major weight loss assistance or a heart workout with yoga, it’s good to add in one class each week to strengthen your spirit and connect mind with body.

It may surprise you to learn that Yoga dates back to 3300-1700 B.C.E. and has long been a practice of Buddhists, Hindus and other Eastern religions. But what should not be surprising the tremendous benefits that this form of exercise and meditation can bring to your life. Working professionals, students, home-makers and the retired alike are finding how wonderful they feel after participating. The sense of calm that prevails as well as the satisfaction of muscles well worked all make Yoga the perfect blend of philosophy, religion and exercise. Even if you do not practice the spiritual aspects of this ancient practice, you can still benefit. Click here to see more: Tantra Yoga and at Yoga Certification also at Yoga Moves

Are Anxiety and Depression Related?

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

If you’re experiencing anxiety, you are not alone. Most people today would freely tell you that they are anxious a good part of the day.  But at the same time, there is a connection between anxiety and depression, and one can often lead to the other.  What is that connection and how does this happen?

Two Separate Conditions

Sometimes anxiety and dDepression are things that are experienced by a patient separately, one from the other.  A person may simply have depression as part of their physical and chemical makeup and then be experiencing anxiety on top of it.Family, Money, Job Issues, and other stresses are things we face on a daily basis that could cause anxiety.  They may just be an overly anxious person due to their own nature or personality; some people are just more “high strung” than others.

Their depression is a separate factor than their anxiety, and in these cases anxiety and depression are not related.  You might compare it to how being obese can sometimes lead to diabetes, but sometimes a person might already be diabetic and then gain weight over time.Today Anxiety and Depression are two seperate conditions and looked at seperatly.

Similar Symptoms for Anxiety and Depression Causes

In addition, there are many symptoms that are similar when it comes to anxiety and depression.  Anxiety can lead a person to be distracted, angry, upset, frustrated, and want to avoid other people and situations.  Depression can have many of the same symptoms.  Being depressed doesn’t always mean just being sad, but it can also mean being angry and frustrated and isolating oneself.  In cases such as these a person may assume that they have both anxiety and depression when in reality just one set of symptoms is overlapping the other.

Anxiety Leads to Depression

When a person is overly anxious for an extended period of time, this is damaging to them mentally, physically and emotionally.  The body is not designed to be at a heightened state of emergency for days or even hours on end.  When a person suffers anxiety, depression may be a result of that heightened state of awareness.  They are simply wearing themselves out and the body’s only way of coping is to force itself to become depressed.

Additionally because a person is anxious over outside factors these same factors may make him or her feel depressed.  Family problems, job problems, financial setbacks, a divorce or death, needing to move to a new area, and many factors that cause anxiety can also cause a person to suffer from depression.  They have both anxiety and depression because of these outside factors. When you look at these two conditions in this light you can see they are related.

Dealing with both anxiety and depression is a very difficult set of circumstances for anyone, and even for the family of the sufferer.  While we can’t always remove the causes of our anxiety and cure depression, it is possible to treat and cope with these conditions.Medicine is one arena to go for help and assistance but also there are therapists that can assist.

Are There Advantages In Yoga For Pregnant Women

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

When you’re pregnant, there’s an almost obsessive protectiveness and an overwhelming desire to do everything you can to foster healthy prenatal development. You may have heard about yoga for pregnant women, but may have also wondered, “Is it safe?” or “What can I or can’t I do?” This article will tell you a little about this new craze sweeping the nation and seeks to explain the obvious (and not so obvious) benefits of taking a yoga class during those nine months.

Pregnant women practice yoga for physical benefits. For instance, yoga practice can teach techniques that will be helpful during labor, such as breathing and relieving tension around the cervix and birth canal. Additionally, prenatal physicians recommend combining a light cardiovascular exercise (like walking) with a relaxing, muscle-toning exercise (like yoga) to maintain your physique, in spite of the intense cravings and normal weight gain associated with pregnancy.

Other pregnant women practice yoga for mental benefits. For one, it can be a great support to meet other women going through the same thing you are. Also, there is much emphasis on focusing on the moment and deriving happiness from each and every day, which can be vital when your hormones are out of whack. Yoga has been known to stimulate beta-endorphins, which also brings comfort and a sense of relief.

During the first trimester, standing poses help circulation, strengthen legs and increase energy. Avoid bikram yoga classes that heat up the room or any kind of back/belly/inverted positions. In the second and third trimesters, yoga for your pregnancy will include more sitting positions and breathing techniques.

Yoga videos can be previewed at YouTube.com — or you can read user reviews on Amazon.com as well. There are many options featuring yoga for pregnant women, so it’s all a matter of your personal preference regarding setting, instructor, technique and comfort. Some focus more on emotional benefits, whereas others are designed to help strengthen muscles. You may also want to look into communal yoga classes at Yoga.com. Either way, this is a special time to bond with your baby — don’t pass this up!

Understanding Graviola Extract

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Graviola, also known as soursop, guanabana, or Brazilian Paw Paw, is an evergreen tree found in tropical areas of North and South America. The heart-shaped fruit, along with leaves, roots, and stems, has been used in traditional herbal medicine in native cultures for many years. Graviola is a fruit tree native to North and South America and the Caribbean, where it is known by such names as Paw-Paw, Soursop, and Guanabana. The species native to South America is the Guanabana tree, and it is prized for its fruit, which is used in drinks, ice cream, and marmalades. Graviola is a small, upright evergreen tree growing 5 to 6 meters in height with large dark green and glossy leaves. It is indigenous to most of the warmest tropical areas in South and North America including the Amazon.

Graviola should only be taken as a complementary therapy upon the advice of your physician. Graviola products (capsules and tinctures) are becoming more widely available in the U.S. As one of Graviola’s mechanisms of action is to deplete ATP energy to cancer cells, combining it with other supplements and natural products which increase or enhance cellular ATP may reduce the effect of Graviola..

Graviola seeds demonstrated active anti-parasitic properties in a 1991 study, and a leaf extract showed to be active against malaria in two other studies (in 1990 and 1993). The leaves, root, and seeds of Graviola demonstrated insecticide properties, with the seeds demonstrating strong insecticidal activity in an early 1940 study. Graviola is indigenous to warm tropical areas in the Americas, including the Amazon. It produces a 6-to-9 inch, heart-shaped edible fruit, yellow-green in color, with white flesh. Graviola has a long, rich history of use in herbal medicine as well as a lengthy recorded indigenous use. In the Peruvian Andes, a leaf tea is used for catarrh (inflammation of mucous membranes) and the crushed seed is used to kill parasites.

Graviola Max combines both species of graviola (Annona muricata and Annona montana) to provide 12 different types of acetogenins,108 distinct powerful chemicals in all. Graviola is thought to relieve temporary depression and nervous conditions. It acts as a nervine that strengthens the functional activity of the nervous system and performs as a relaxant, easing the discomforts of nervous disorders, stress and anxiety. Graviola Capsules are a group of Annonaceous Acetogenins which are only found in the Annonaceae family to which Graviola belongs.

Graviola extract produces these natural compounds in its leaf and stem, bark, and fruit seeds. Three separate research groups have confirmed that these chemicals have significant antitumorous properties and selective toxicity against various types of cancer cells (without harming healthy cells) publishing eight clinical studies on their findings. Graviola tea taken orally or applied on the skin is also used as an insect repellent. Graviola seeds demonstrated active antiparasitic properties in a 1991 study, and a leaf extract showed to be active against malaria in two other studies in 1990 and 1993. The leaves, root, and seeds of Graviola demonstrated insecticidal properties with the seed demonstrating strong insecticidal activity in a early 1940 study.

Effects Of Alcohol Abuse: The Big Picture

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

We all suffer from the pressures of life’s trials and tribulations that we must overcome.. Unfortunately too many of us are now turning to instant relief found in consuming large quantities of alcohol. The problem is that the relief is only temporary. Wwhen you wake up the next day you still have the same problems to face. You will be surprised how many people drink, and become alcoholics, to help them to forget their daily problems or even to ease the emotional pain they are experiencing in their lives. They seek further solace in the blur of alcoholic haze.

Whenever there is any abuse and over indulgence in any substance there are effects that appear unexpectedly The effects of alcohol abuse come in many forms.  Some are emotional, some are physical, and some can even be financial. In reality the negative effects of alcohol abuse far outweigh any supposed benefits you may think that it brings to you.

Even though the alcoholic may not realize it one of the effects of alcohol abuse is the destruction of your emotional well being.  In many cases alcohol abuse brings out the worst in a person. This abuse is often directed towards family and friends who can in most cases be counted on to stand by you in your hour of need. However, there is a limit to the physical and emotional abuse that your family and friends can take before they are forced to turn their back on you.

In most cases your friends and family are your most important support structure; they will stand by you in good times and bad.  Alcohol abuse can easily lead to physically fighting with your friends and family and consequently a loss of trust.

Ask yourself, would you trust someone that is drunk all the time?  Sometimes the results are that your friends and family are either forced to abandon you to avoid you taking them down into your personal hell or they are forced to seek an intervention.  Either result puts a great deal of strain on your relationship and can cause serious emotional damage.

Do You Want to Lose It All?

When you become alcohol dependent you often find ways to grab a drink during your day at work this will reduce your productivity and in some cases endanger your being as you try to perform your tasks under the influence of alcohol. Most, if not all employers will automatically terminate drunk employees. Therefore loss of income is another effect of alcohol abuse and when you lose your job to the effects of alcohol it unleashes an entire series of terrible events.  At some point you can no longer pay your bills, your home and car are likely to be repossessed, the family you have sworn to support has to leave to find a better way in life, and you are left with nothing.

Listen, without any exaggeration if you continue to abuse alcohol on a daily basis you stand to lose literally everything that you hold dear in your life and your road to recovery will be long and difficult.

Alcohol abuse is everywhere, look around you and you will see the suffering that it causes. The road to recovery is strewn with alcoholics whose lives have been ruined, not to mention all the pain and anguish suffered by family and friends. Recovery from alcohol abuse is not as easy as the movies and television portray it to be. It is a long and painful process. Many people try and fail at many times over before they finally do succeed..

Thankfully there is a way out of this terrible scourge but real strength and determination is a prerequisite to fight your way out of this ailment.

Yoga and Pilates - How One Form Compliments The Other

Posted by Healthy Lifestyle Adviser 18 November, 2008 (0) Comment

Aside from being celebrities, what do Jennifer Aniston, Cindy Crawford, Hugh Grant, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Rod Stewart and Kristi Yamaguchi have in common? They’ve all hopped on the yoga and pilates trend for physical toning and spiritual relaxation!

Yoga and pilates are often lumped together as one. They both compliment a normal exercise routine by sculpting the body and improving strength, flexibility and coordination. They both involve stretching, slow deliberate and repetitive motions, regulated breathing processes and establishing an overall sense of wellbeing. In a fast-paced society full of various athletes, strength training and weight machines are an American pastime in many gyms. Therefore, many modern Western instructors and athletic trainers work pilates into their yoga practice to change things up a bit.

Clear differences between yoga and pilates include some of the following: First, yoga is an ancient Indian practice that dates back approximately 5,000 years, whereas pilates is an adaptation of yoga dating back eighty years to a German athlete, Joseph Pilate. Secondly, in addition to physical activity, yoga is an entire holistic program that encompasses diet, meditation, breathing techniques, religious edict and a moral code; Pilates is simply a form of exercise and body sculpting technique. Thirdly, yoga aims to unite mind and body, as well as cleanse the body of toxins, while pilates is fashioned to strengthen, define and improve posture. Additionally, in yoga, you are taught to inhale and exhale through the nose, whereas pilates employs the traditional athletic mode of breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth while performing an action. Lastly, yoga can generally be done with just a mat (although sometimes props are used), while instructors ensure everyone’s in proper form; pilates, on the other hand, has specific machinery designed to assist practitioners.

Yoga and pilates classes can be found at most athletic clubs (check PilateInsight.com or YogaFinder.com for complete directories). Different yoga classes may include: Vinyasa yoga, Hatha yoga, Anusara yoga, prenatal yoga, meditation yoga, yoga in the workplace or Iyengar yoga. Some examples of different pilates yoga classes offered include: group mat class, group reformer class, private sessions, pilates with props, pilates for specific conditions, pregnancy pilates, pilates for sports and hybrid pilates.

Perhaps more than any other form of exercise, Yoga has been around the longest. Originating in India, this popular form of exercise has been practiced around the world. Why? The physical portion of the workout is very low-impact and can be performed by anyone of any age. The same cannot be said of kick boxing classes or Jazzercise. But there is more to Yoga than just working out the body. It is also a lifestyle that can bring clarity to the mind through spiritual exercises of meditation and concentration.
